Thanks to the lovely ladies of Salisbury for your generous donations of preloved bras!
Despite lockdown, Salisbury Soroptimists’ call for donations of recycled bras was heard and responded to by generous women across Salisbury, allowing us to surpass our last year’s total of bras collected once again. Club Treasurer Penny took a grand total of 1251 donated ‘preloved’ bras to the sorting room of Smalls for All in Scotland. Penny’s journey marks the culmination of a third successful year of bra collection (bringing the SI Salisbury total collection to some 2841). Thanks to her for her role as collection point and delivery driver and to everyone in Salisbury who donated bras.
Donations had been left on doorsteps, in gardens, pushed through letterboxes and even handed through open windows! All obeying social distancing rules and adding up to a great contribution for women in the poorest parts of Africa, where wearing a bra gives a woman dignity and self-respect.
Smalls for All is a Scottish charity which collects and distributes underwear to help adults and children in Africa and the UK. They operate from the UK and support people and charitable organisations working on projects in Africa who are able to transport and distribute the bras collected.
Soroptimist International of Salisbury is the local Club of the global women’s organisation. The key aims of members are to transform the lives of women and girls worldwide to make a positive difference to their lives. The annual collection of bras for reuse by women in need is one of a number of projects run by members taking action locally, nationally and internationally.
Members of the Club held a socially distanced sorting evening in July when most of the bras were counted, sorted and packed ready for their journey north. Further bras were donated after the event. All the contributions will be shipped and distributed to women in need by the charity.
