A man is in custody following a burglary at a vulnerable elderly couple’s home in Laverstock.
Shortly after 11 am yesterday (21/10), a man called at the address of a couple aged in their 90s claiming they owed money. He entered the address and when the victim got his wallet out, the man took a quantity of cash and made off from the scene.
The incident left the elderly couple feeling extremely distressed.
A description of the vehicle believed to have been used by the suspect was passed to officers and searches of the local area were conducted leading officers towards the Downton area.
The vehicle was located in Morgans Rise Road and a man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of burglary. An amount of cash was also seized.
The man was taken to Melksham custody for questioning where he remains.
Det Sgt Anthony King, of the Operation Fortitude team, said: “Understandably, this incident has left this elderly couple feeling extremely distressed and vulnerable in their own home. This is unacceptable behaviour and they will be offered additional support from our Horizon Victim and Witness Care team.
“Operation Fortitude has been set up to target offenders who prey on vulnerable people within our communities to commit crime and this is an example of the good work being carried out by officers. Our enquiries remain ongoing.”
