Friday 8th January saw the culmination of a week of virtual balloon racing across the world, raising an incredible £4,500 in aid of Salisbury Hospice.
The virtual balloons took off from the hospice on New Year’s Day to celebrate the start of Salisbury Hospice’s 40th anniversary year. Using algorithms, live weather systems and Google maps the virtual balloon-racing platform allows balloons to behave, fly and burst just like real balloons.
The virtual balloons were released at 6 pm and travelled in a southerly direction towards France. By the final day of the race, a number had made it over to Spain, with a balloon called ‘Raymond W’ way out in the lead having travelled 781.49km.
The race finished at 6 pm on January 8th, with first-place going to balloon Raymond W, second place Screaming Bear Demon and third place going to Lando Noris.
The winner, who purchased their balloon over the phone, has donated £250 back to our hospice said ‘I can’t believe it, what a fabulous start to a miserable year’.
