In their fourth year of collecting lightly used bras, Salisbury Soroptimists this year almost doubled their total collected to date with a record 2000+ bras donated by local ladies.
The bras and knickers go to ‘Smalls for All’ for shipping out to a variety of areas in Africa where, as the charity has found, underwear gives women dignity and self-worth.
As well as choirs, WIs, and other village groups, such as Alderbury and Winterslow, this year young people also got involved in the collection especially Burgate School and Leehurst Swan School, who helped to swell the total to record numbers.
Project organiser Penny Joyce said: “We are very grateful to all the lovely ladies locally who donated and collected underwear on our behalf. Bras were appearing through letterboxes, on windowsills, in gardens and on doorsteps, and we’d like to thank everyone who helped. We would particularly like to acknowledge 5 Rivers Leisure Centre who over the last 2 months acted as a collection point for bras.”
Members of the Club were finally able to meet up face to face for the first time since lockdown and spent a very pleasant afternoon in a member’s garden, socially distanced, sorting, counting and packing up the bras for delivery to Scotland. We are delighted with the response, thank you!”
