One year ago today (10th August), the mySalisbury website went live.
The project is designed to deliver positive community-led news to the people of Salisbury and Southern Wiltshire. The original idea was to run workshops to enable community journalists to report on the good that is happening in their own backyard. Tell the stories that other news outlets in and around the city don’t have the time or space to report upon. The continued restrictions of the pandemic have made this hard, though the site has continued to publish news.
We have not been deterred, over 600 articles have been published and shared with the community. Over 40,000 people have read, shared and commented on those articles.
Wiltshire Council’s Area Boards have supported us with our next steps. Salisbury and Southern Wiltshire Area Boards, through grants, have enabled us to buy equipment for use by our community journalists. Equipment that our volunteers will be free to use to gather content to publish on our platform.
With this equipment and through workshops, we are excited to launch our first series of journalism and workshops.
Our first workshop will run on Monday 27th of September at a venue in Salisbury, which will be confirmed shortly. We are aware the pandemic has not gone away, so numbers for workshops will be restricted and run in a manner to make all those attending feel safe.
Andy Munns, founder of mySalisbury said: “It’s really exciting to finally launch our first workshops. It’s been a tough year for everyone and it’s nice to be able to invite people along to our workshops to help people learn some new skills and hopefully have some fun along the way. It’s going to be really interesting to see what content will be published via our site and the community we can build.”
We will be running workshops that cover; writing for journalism, photography, videography, podcasting, video/audio editing and publishing to the internet. There will also be workshops around the specialist software that may be used to enhance these areas.
No experience or equipment is necessary, we can help with all of that. You just need an interest in sharing the good things that happen around our area. We are looking for people to report on the following topics:
- Entertainment & Arts
- Local History
