Man Utd’s farewell meeting with Anthony Elanga – and the unprompted message from Ryan Reynolds

Erik ten Hag and Manchester United’s football director John Murtough sat down with Anthony Elanga in New Jersey before the Sweden forward left the club’s US tour to complete a move to Nottingham Forest.

They talked through the transfer and wished Elanga good luck as player and club parted on good terms.

Elanga, 21, had known before the start of the summer that his first-team prospects at Old Trafford next season would be limited in the extreme and a transfer suits all parties.

United will receive an initial £15 million for Elanga, whose highlight for the club came in the Champions League the season before last when he scored in a 1-1 draw away to Atletico Madrid.

But the rise could rise to £20 million over the next few years depending on how he performs and United also have a sell-on clause on the player.

United have likened the situation to the one with James Garner, who joined Everton last summer after concluding that he was not going to make the grade in their first team.

‌Garnacho has a new fan

Ten Hag and United supporters are not the only ones who rate Alejandro Garnacho very highly.

Vinicius Jr – arguably the world’s best winger – is a big fan of United’s Argentina flyer, it seems. There was a nice moment outside the dressing rooms at the NRG Stadium in Houston on Thursday when the Real Madrid star presented Garnacho with his signed No. 7 shirt along with a special message.

Vinicius addressed Garnacho as ‘el crack’ – the slang term in Spanish and South American football for a superstar – along with the words ‘Para mi hermano’, which means ‘For my brother’ in Portuguese.

‌Ryan Reynolds contacts Nathan Bishop

Nathan Bishop has had a rough couple of days after his challenge on Paul Mullin put the Wrexham striker in hospital with a punctured lung.

But the Manchester United goalkeeper was touched to receive an unprompted message from the Wrexham co-owner and Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds to thank him for the way he dealt with the incident and wish him the best for the future.

Bishop issued an apology to Mullin on social media and reached out to the Wrexham dressing room to express his regret.

Phil Parkinson, the Wrexham manager, had irked United by hitting out at Bishop and suggesting the goalkeeper should give them a wide berth.

But Bishop has been exchanging messages directly with Mullin and there is not said to be any issue between them. Mullin is expected to miss the start of the new League Two season with the injury.

Players mingle with the Houston Texans

United’s squad trained at the NRG the morning after their 2-0 defeat to Real before flying back to San Diego. And they took the opportunity to mix with players from the Houston Texans NFL outfit, who play their games at the NRG, at the end of the training session.

For the likes of Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw, it also offered the chance to practise their throwing and kicking skills alongside Texans punter Cameron Johnston and kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn. Players from both sides later swapped shirts.

Ten Hag also met with the Texans’ chief executive Cal McNair and wife Hannah, who is the vice-president of the Houston Texans Foundation.

‌Brandon Williams injury free

The lesser spotted Brandon Williams made an appearance as a second half substitute against Real. This is the full-back’s first pre-season in three years after injuries wrecked previous summers. Williams, 22, says he has “come back hungry” after an injury plagued past season but United will listen to offers for him should an acceptable bid come in. Equally, he could leave on loan if there are any takers.

United players to tee it up at Torrey Pines

Some of United’s players, including Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Tom Heaton, are likely to be hitting the world famous Torrey Pines golf course in San Diego on Friday. And there is talk of the squad being given the chance to watch the San Diego Padres baseball team in action against the Texas Rangers at Petco Park later that evening.
