Following their 22-21 defeat to South Africa in the final round of the Rugby Championship, here are our player ratings for Argentina.

15 Juan Cruz Mallia: Solid at the back but not a huge amount of opportunity in attack. Mallia didn’t do enough to usurp Emiliano Boffelli, whose place-kicking was very much missed. 6

14 Mateo Carreras: Was very close to breaking through a couple of times but the Springboks shackled him well enough, until he managed to touch down late on. 6

13 Lucio Cinti: Dangerous when given an inch of space but, like Carreras, the Boks did well to limit those opportunities. 6

12 Santiago Chocobares: A good game in both attack and defence. Slick hands and an outstanding tackler, he has put himself in the frame for the 12 jersey going forward. 7

11 Juan Imhoff: See the other Los Pumas outside backs. Struggled to break free from the hosts’ impressive defence. 6

10 Santiago Carreras: If only his place-kicking was on point, otherwise it was another fine display. Really maturing in terms of his decision-making in the 10 shirt. 6

9 Lautaro Bazan Velez: Struggled to impose himself with the South Americans better when Gonzalo Bertranou entered the field of play. 5

8 Juan Martin Gonzalez: Great to watch in the wider channels, with his footwork and pace, but also does his bit in the tight. 7

7 Santiago Grondona: Put himself about and made one key maul turnover but was taken off early on in the second half as England looked to get to grips with the Boks’ physicality. 6

6 Pablo Matera: Very good once again from the flanker, who tackled well and was prominent in the carry in the second half. 7

5 Tomas Lavanini: The lock has played incredibly well this Rugby Championship and was once again one of Argentina’s best. 8

4 Lucas Paulos: Did pretty well until being forced but his replacement, Pedro Rubiolo, was even better. 6

3 Francisco Gomez Kodela: Struggled at times in the set-piece but Argentina did enough to make sure it was not enough a massive factor in the game. 5

2 Julian Montoya (c): Concern when he suffered a head injury but came back on and played a big part in the team’s improved second half. 7

1 Thomas Gallo: Better effort in the scrum than in previous matches, especially considering the opposition, but still improvements that can be made. 5

Replacements: The bench, particularly prop Joel Sclavi and lock Rubiolo, made big impacts, while there were good contributions from Facundo Isa, Bertranou and Matias Moroni. 8
