Grant Williams’ participation in South Africa’s Rugby Championship Test against Argentina lasted just 10 seconds after he was forced off the field due to a horrific injury shortly after the match started.

Argentina fly-half Santiago Carreras got proceedings underway with a deep kick off which Williams fielded close to his try-line and the Bok scrum-half decided to kick for touch.

Knocked out cold

However, Los Pumas full-back Juan Cruz Mallia charged it down and, while doing that, his hip made contact with Williams’ face, and the Springbok immediately went down as he was knocked out cold by the challenge.

Initially, referee Andrew Brace did not bring proceedings to a halt as the Boks were blown up for a penalty shortly after the incident, but Willie le Roux brought the match official’s attention to the incident.

Brace and his TMO, Joy Neville, reviewed the incident and agreed that there was no foul play from Mallia, but Williams was forced off the field on a stretcher after a long break in play while he received medical attention.

He was replaced by Faf de Klerk but Argentina soon took the lead courtesy of a Carreras penalty and the visitors were soon 6-0 up after the fly-half added another three-pointer off the kicking tee

The Boks struck back via a Manie Libbok penalty before Eben Etzebeth crossed for the opening try. The Boks continued to dominate and in the 26th minute Damian de Allende went over for their second five-pointer after a strong driving maul for the home side.

Libbok succeeded with the conversion before Carreras was on target with his third penalty which meant South Africa held a 15-9 lead when the teams changed sides at half-time.
