Australia’s star striker Sam Kerr says she is “definitely available” for their decisive Women’s World Cup Group B match against Canada on Monday, after missing the co-hosts’ opening two matches with a calf injury.

The Chelsea centre-forward’s fitness has been a major concern for the Matildas and the subject of intense speculation ever since it was dramatically revealed, just over an hour before kick-off in their opening fixture against the Republic of Ireland on 20 July, that she would unexpectedly miss that match and their second fixture against Nigeria.

Having lost 3-2 to Nigeria, Australia now must beat Olympic champions Canada in Melbourne to guarantee avoiding a nightmarishly-early exit from their home competition. A draw could be enough for both of those sides to squeeze through, but only if already-eliminated Ireland were to beat Nigeria.

“I feel good,” Kerr told reporters at a press conference on Saturday. “The plan has always been the same: miss the first two games and then reassess.

“So I’m feeling good. I was out on the pitch today, as good as I can be.”

Asked if she would start the game against Canada, Kerr said: “It’s going to go down to the wire. I’m definitely going to be available but how we decide to use that is not to be given to the opposition.”

The 29-year-old, who has been the poster star in the build-up to this event as one of the best players in the world and as Australia’s best-known women’s footballer, added: “I’ve done everything under the sun to get fit to be selected. I’ve given everything in the last 10 days, and four years before that, to be here.”

Canada began their campaign with a 0-0 draw against Nigeria, before coming from behind to beat Ireland last time out, leaving them on four points along with Nigeria, and with Australia sitting third in the group.
