A man who had been released from prison five days before stabbing an elderly mobility scooter rider to death has been detained indefinitely in a psychiatric hospital.

Lee Byer, 45, who previously admitted manslaughter, killed Thomas O’Halloran, in Greenford, west London, in August 2022.

The plea was accepted on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

A group of children tried to help the 87-year-old but he could not be saved.

The Old Bailey heard Byer believed he was part of a Hunger Games scenario where he had to defend himself.

Two psychiatrists gave evidence he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia resulting in delusions and psychosis.
